[AMRadio] Viking II Power Mod

Hi Ron,

Doing the screen mod will certainly drop the power but now the plate load impedance will be way off and off course you will need to really back off on the modulation drive.  The tank circuit might make the change, but when you do, it will not tune to any normal setting and have proper modulation.  It will work, but with the above reservations.

Subject: [AMRadio] Viking II Power Mod

Greetings everyone.  I have a simple question concerning my old Viking II.   I am just finishing up a 3 X 813 linear and need to consider how to drive it with the Viking II.

Building a large attenuator is one simple solution with 8 - 10db of attenuation but then I recalled the Viking Ranger mod of a pot in the 6146 screen voltage line to adjust the power out put for amps.

After studying the Viking II schematic and measuring the voltages I see the two 6146 screens are tied in together in parallel.

It seems rational to me to simply break the screen supply line and install a large 5 watt, 50 K linear taper pot on the rear apron to crank the power output down to drive the amp.

Anyone have any thoughts on the subject?  Almost seems too easy...
