The market for some things is driven by non-technical people with
money unfortunately.

Earlier this year I decided to look around for an Astatic JT30 mic
like the one I gave away around 20 years ago.  They have a 10 meg xtal
element and would work great with one of my rigs.   I figured they'd
be maybe $20 or $30.

Well, surprise, they often are hundreds of dollars.   Why?  Because
these idiot "blues harp" harmonica players decided they are perfect
for achieving this distorted sound through a tube amp so they all bid
these way up and harp harmonica mic vendors buy them up to sell for
$200 or higher prices.

So a regular guy who is a ham and just wants a mic for his rig has
been priced out of the JT30 market, unless he gets lucky and finds one
at an estate sale or something.  There was one at the Indianapolis
Hamfest but the seller wanted over $100 for it, probably having seen
what they go for on eBay.  It's just a simple bullet head xtal mic
that Astatic sold for $15 or $19.  Anyway, this is an example of how
the non-technical people with money can establish a price level that
is way above value reality.   It is the same way with any little
vintage tube audio amp.  The glass audio crowd has made them sky high
in price.
