[AMRadio] Dreaded D-104

I must admit that the D-104 seems to have an almost cult-like following for 
reasons I find inscrutable. My Dad (W5JHJ, SK) never liked them, saying that 
they sounded "tinny." He came from a broadcast background and, at one time, had 
vintage a Shure 55 that he used on his Globe Champ 350. I couldn't find that mic 
when I went through his things after he died; it may have disappeared along with 
several other items that I knew used to be there but that I couldn't find when 
the time came to sort it all out. Anyway, looking at the frequency response of 
the D-104 element that I see on Mouser's page, there are certainly better 
microphones out there from a purely audio standpoint. However, the D-104 is an 
icon and far be it from me to be an iconoclast!

My suggestion would be to obtain a Shure 444.

You would most likely be just as happy, or perhaps happier.

I've gone to Shure mics since I became licensed in 1980.

I've got a couple of 444s and also a 737.

Much better response curves.  Match the natural human voice, unless one 
should happen to be "Pee Wee Herman".
