I am not familiar with the R- 388.  I have used a 75 A-1 years ago.  What ever I end up with I'll mainly use it on AM.  I have really gotten a lot of good suggestions.

Or an R-388 which can be found much cheaper than an A-2, or for that 
matter, an A-1.  It has the crystal filter and much better audio than 
its ham only counterparts.
