I can get pretty close to the date when the reduction in privileges for the lower class licenses cut in. I took my Extra Class test in September of 1967. I was "poor as a church mouse" then since we had three little kids and I was in graduate school working toward a PhD in EE. I didn't even break loose with the money to buy a License Manual. QST had published the new Extra Class questions but not the answers, and I figured I knew enough of them to be able to pass. It was either upgrade from General Class or build a new, 25 kHz crystal calibrator, and the upgrade was cheaper. I borrowed a License Manual from another applicant out in the hall before the exam to look up several answers I wasn't sure of. And I passed both the Extra Class test, cw and theory, and my written General Exams that month. Whew!
