John, in 1951, where 'fone was allowed was ALL AM.  There was either 
'fone or CW, back then.

Pretty much 80 and 20m.  40m was all CW, 15m hadn't been allocated, and 
Hams still had 11m, called the "Best DX band that hams ever had"
