I remember when working as a audio engineer at a TV broadcast station in the
late 60s we did those tests manually and the voice and tone was on a cart
and the engineer at the tx had to cut the carrier off and back on. I don't
believe that is done any more. There was another cart sent from the
government I believe that was sealed and not to be previewed. We were told
if we were instructed to play that cart we were to vacate the station
immediately without even finding out what was on the cart.
