This brings up an important point - anytime we bring chemicals into 
contact with vintage electronics, give some thought to the residue 
that's left behind.   I can't remember where, but someone wrote an 
article summarizing his experiments with various household cleaners that 
showed how it's definitely possible for the cure to produce worse damage 
than the disease.  As the eminent Dr. Barry Ortiz often pointed out with 
regard to cleaning chemicals, there is no magic wand that can make an 
old radio chassis look like the day it left the factory, and when it 
comes to cleaning "there's no substitute for elbow grease".
