Subject: Re: [AMRadio] Extra Class
I sure didn't mean to stir up a hornet's nest!
I was employed in Uncle Sam's military when I got my Novice and general
in 1980.
I had to keep traveling to far off places with little or no warning.
The 20 WPM was no issue whatsoever. I ran 30 to 35 WPM as a novice.
Time passed, the rules changed, and I just never had the time to
continue. I'd have been content to go Advanced Class, and then Extra.
Anyway, when I looked into getting the Extra done this past summer, they
had added this *STUPID* requirement to *PROVE* that you had Element 3
PRIOR to 1987.
Since being military for over 20 yrs, one learned to thin out what
possessions that you shipped since they chraged YOU for being over
weight on household goods, Things like collections of ARRL yearly
handbooks, callbooks, and other thing NOT necessary for family life an
the Military, went out! We didn't do the recycling thing back then.
I had complete sets of story books that got donated to the Base Library.
Anyway, I did NOT keep my *Original* license every time I renewed it,
NOR did I keep the flaming Callbooks that would have shown the information.
So now I've got the bloody letter!
I have no beef with taking the exam! I just don't have a need for
digital modes, other than CW, (I still have my original Nye-Viking
straight key.), I could care less about satellites, other than trying to
see them with my 8" telescope.
The local club ONLY does the test for Extra Class with its annual Hamfest.
I don't know *IF* the FBI training center on Quantico, Marine Corps
Base, still does the exam on a monthly or quarterly basis or not. Since
Sept. 11, 2001, they sure have tightened things up. I don't even know
what it would take to go fishing in Lunga Reservoir, since you have to
go directly past the FBI Academy to get to it.
I'll take it when I can, and where I can, within some reasonable
distance. That means within two hours driving distance, and a place I
can find!
GPS is a wonderful thing - BUT - it still show my house, in my driveway,
is four house, by street address, different than what the city calls it,
and has for 28 years.
Whew! Maybe this will settle some of the smoke down!
Bob N0DGN, originally KA4PBD. (Checked a wrong box in 1981 when
renewing due to address change!)
