I believe that the "Modern Manual" you are referring to id for the
R-390A NOT the R-390.
The R-390 came first, and has the pair of 6082s, and uses L/C filters in
the IF. The R-390A came later, as a cost reduction version. It uses
Mechanical Filters in the IF.
Both are great radios, BUT they are very different.
It really needs to be determined WHICH one has before offering
information and suggestions.
Additionally, there is an R-390 list on the QTH.net servers that
specializes in both of these fine radios.
