Actually, you could use either type. The 6146 delivers essentially the 
same power in either AB1 or AB2. The Hammond 124D seems to be a popular 
replacement, although I haven't personally tried it.

  I'd suggest converting  the 12AU7 driver to a phase splitter and 
completely eliminate the need for a transformer. I did this in my 
Valiant, and it works well.
