Thanks, Jim. Actually, on the schematic I got online for the Valiant the
secondary does have a third wire (CT) from the modulation/audio driver (T4)
going to the modulation bias potentiometer.

The Ranger modulation transformer has a tertiary winding for negative 
feedback, the Valiant doesn't.
