Craig.

You can just run a 3 wire circit, but 4 is better.   You can just run black
as hot, white as hot and the green or bare wire as neutral.  For example. My
air conditioner out side is fed by common 12 guage romex. white and black
are hot and the bare wire is ground.

But when I wired my KWS-1 and 30-S1 units I used 4 conductior SO cord with a
4 conductor plug. Get confusing.
