[AMRadio] SB-200 on AM

Of course if the DX-60 was modified for pure screen grid modulation,
then the math seems to work out much better.... I was thinking with 15
watts, this might be a minimum to get an SB-200 to 200 watts... then 60
will get you the 600 watts on your pep.

The May 1989 AM Press exchange features the mod to do that. This was
originally done up by the Timtron.

The math just isn't working out for me on this. The DX-60 doesn't
usually put out more than 15 watts of resting carrier. Even if it is
changed to pure Screen Grid modulation with no controlled carrier, 15
watts x 4 (100 percent modulation) gives the 60 watts of pep that the
6146 will deliver cleanly in that configuration. The SB-200 will
simply not be sitting at 200 watts with 15 watts in.

John and Fellas,

Off note, personally I don't think I've ever heard a SB-200 being
driven
by a DX-60 on AM sound badly at approximately 200 watts carrier. Of
course the DX-60 does not run plate modulation. But that setup sounds
great to my ears.

looks good on a scope, no noticeable compression of the positive peaks,
and I
get good reports on the air. I drive it from low power rigs like my
National
NTX-30/NSM or my Harvey Wells TBS-50D.
