When I tried a 5U4 in my EICO 720, the 5U4's were to tall to close the 
cover.
Even the squatty looking 5U4 have more height than a GZ34.
A few pwr diodes on an octal socket is the best bet.

You can build a solid state rectifier replacement for pennies. Given the
tube lineup, a 5U4 or 5R4, with rewired socket, should also work fine.
