That is what I did. What is dismal is they won't, and will not consider it no matter what happens.

I have to agree.
Years past, I'd run a sked with my dad, from CO to OK. Occasionally,
we'd run into some group of miserable little wretches that would fire
up when we had been in QSO for some time, crank all knobs to the
right and declare that it was "their" frequency. Clearly, any idiot
can talk, as they so ably proved. I'd simply tell my Dad to QRX while
I looked for a clear spot. I'd find one and we'd QSY.
Did their behavior really, really (and I mean really!) irritate me?
YES! Were they in the wrong? YES! Would I have loved to cram their RF
right back down their throats? SURE! But, my goal wasn't to prove
them wrong or somehow show the world what jerks they really were: my
goal was to make the sked work, so I did. We have lots of spectrum:
use it as needed! Leave the miserable little wretches to play in
their own dung heap...

I've been following this thread for a couple of days and I guess I am in
agreement with Kim. I have a weekly Digital SSTV sked with a small group on
the top band. We are usually on 1932 or there abouts and the group runs
mostly WI & MN with an occasional Canadian check-in. I generally start the
session and I ALWAYS ask if the freq. is in use. I have experienced a band
shift where a QSO from the east coast that wasn't heard at first later
becomes noticable. When that happens ( maybe twice a year??) we find out if
they can hear us and if so we QSY by agreement with the other QSO. There
isn't any discussion of who was there first because there isn't anyway to
determine that.
Are there inconsiderate operators? You bet! But that doesn't and shouldn't
taint the mode! I am sure we have all encountered the good old boy groups on
75 over the years and certainly all modes are aflicted ( yes even AM ). I
also have a small group that meets once a week for CW on 80 and occasionally
the same thing happens but so far at least everyone has been considerate and
one of the groups will QSY.
I also run my T368 & R390 on AM and find that group to be a really nice
bunch of hams.
It's a little like having some jerk cut you off on the freeway! You can get
all bent out of shape and start a road rage incident or you can just let it
go.... As difficult as it is, I generally let it go!
Carry on and enjoy whatever mode you like. Don't be afraid to try something
new now and then...

Well, he says down at the bottom that he bought this receiver to be part of a
retirement project, guess he's expecting to fund his retirement by selling it.
Hope he has some other income or a real good 401k.

I'm with Pete and Don on this--QSYing does nothing but positively
reinforce their m.o. by rewarding them with the result they desire.
If the AM QSO was first, it needs to strap.
We all need to build up big mauls with lots of audio headroom, minimum
audio power that's 1.5 times carrier output to allow for running
broadcast processing compression and limiting and of course, high
dipoles if possible.
