I did the gen. cov. rx thing in my novice days and first few years as
a general. hated it. "what frequecy am I really on?" a xtal
calibrator is a must. Even so I never could shake the feeling I was
getting by with a SWL rx and not a real ham rx. I knew two novices
who had a NC303 and I drooled over it. To me a real rx was a ham
band only rx. I guess I still have that feeling now however back
then I never knew about R-388s and gov't spook receivers.
