There are a few contesters who operate AM, Bob. Just not during
contests. I doubt their contest buddies would look on them kindly. My
guess is that most AMers prefer an actual conversation/discussion/QSO
rather than a mere contact. Whether technical in nature, old radio,
newer Class E or Flex/sandstate related, it's just not much fun in my
opinion to key the mic, blurt out a number or three, then repeat the
cycle endlessly for hours.
Keep in mind that the Heavy Metal Rally is coming up next week, and
last I heard, the AM Transmitter Rally is the first weekend in
February. I hesitate to refer to them as contests even though points
are awarded and some do compete as if it was really important to do
so. The vast majority I've heard and worked seemed to be much more
into enjoying all the different transmitters with the varied types of
audio from different parts of the country and Canada. IIRC, there were
a few stations on last year from south of the border too.
