Good morning, Tom.
Actually that was a reasonable thing for Russ to suggest. But I have
been down that road. There really isn't anything anywhere near here
that is a reliable source of parts. No one around here, that I can
find, does component-level repairs anymore; at best, they do board
swapping and send the defective board back to the factory.
The closest source of parts I've been able to find is You Do It
Electronics (affectionately known around here as "Whodunit") in
Needham, MA, which is about 65 miles from here and usually involves
fighting heavy traffic, and even they don't have anywhere near the
inventory of parts they used to have... I remember the day when one
could almost build a whole receiver or transmitter or amplifier using
the parts available at You Do It, including chasses, cabinets, boxes,
panels, meters, knobs, controls, just about everything, the only
things that had limited or no stock there were transformers,
inductors, and large variable caps, and they really catered to the
hams... but not any more.
