I actually ran it that way for a few days after one of the modulator 
tubes developed a short.  I tried it again yesterday, but the problem 
is happening occasionally in CW also (not as often as with phone).

I do have a couple of good lab scopes... my scopes are better than my 
ears are.  :-)
