No doubt some satellites would have been put out of commission at least 
temporarily, radio communications  would certainly have been disrupted, and 
maybe enough voltage was induced on telegraph lines to draw visible sparks, 
but I am doubtful of the details depicted in that story. Unlikely that any 
photos were taken and sound recording didn't exist.  The story has passed 
down word-of-mouth over the generations to become a legend, probably 
embellished and exaggerated along the way. The same kind of oral tradition 
that has brought us cultural legends in nearly every pre-literate 
traditional society.
