Actually, the max output is 1500w PEP. There is -no- 'maximum' carrier
level for AM operation. The only power limitation is 1500w PEP output.
This means, you could, in theory, reverse the audio phase on a
microphone, or reverse the plate caps on the modulator, whatever.. run
the thing up to 1500w PEP and maybe run 500w of carrier.

If you've got a reasonably well designed rig, that has more than enough
modulator for the amount of plate carrier capacity and you've followed
the audio phase throughout the audio chain, with a natural asymmetrical
voice, you could see 1500w PEP output with as little as 250W of carrier,
and not be over modulated (negative peaks exceeding the base line of the
wave-form).

it's a myth that 375w is a 'magic number' for the maximum carrier of an
amateur radio AM station.
The rule states 1500w PEP output, regardless of mode.
