If a sb200 with 2 572B tubes can be used successfully on AM what about a
Clippertron with 4 572B's? I have tried mine on 40 today at 50 watts and
was told it sounded very good. I did not increase power because more would
get into a very expensive home theater system in the living room. Since
then I put clip on chokes on all the speaker leads and tried it again up to
200 watts and did not get in to the speakers with the stereo off (it had
gotten into the speakers even while off). I need to try agai with the amp
on. the input cables to the amp are hdmi. If the 4 572B's can do 1kw pep
is is safe to assume 200 watts carrier will allow enough headroom for AM? I
would think it would. The Clipperton has 2 hv settings also. a lower
setting for cw and a higher one for ssb. There is no mention of using the
amp on AM at all. At 200 watts carrier into the dummy load 5 minutes
keydown did not cause the plates to glow at all and the exhaust fan air
barely warm. Could the 572B's be better on AM than 3-500's? BTW on low
voltage I see 1300 under load and 220ma plate current when the watmeter
shows 200 watts out. That should be about right figuring 70% effeciency.
All 4 572B's are new.
Any opinions greatly appreciated
