Bob,one simple way to quite the rec is to short across the speaker terms 
..If you are using a Xmtr with PTT it is simple ...Connect a set of contacts 
norm open to spkr terms on back..When you hit PTT the rec will stndby..It is 
a safe method  ,some commercial receivers were controlled that way..LOL
