[AMRadio] WTAG 580 IBOC off for the 2nd day in a row

 It's a Harris 3DX-50 masquerading as a 25. I was campaining for a Nautel NX-25
but apparently the company has an agreement with Harris.

I did pitch a S... Fit because I have had my hands on two other 3DX-50's and
they were maintenance nightmares and Harris is real proud of replacement parts.
I also brought up the fact that distortion on switch mode transmitters goes way
up at reduced power (we go to 2.3 K at night). Harris ran tests and initially
found distortion shot up to 16% and were shocked. Geoff Mendenhall and Ky Lu
went out into the factory and ginned up a 25 Kw rig with all the modules of a 50
present but operating at half power to reduce the step size of the waveform and
then wrote some new software which may become the standard release which reduces
distortion to 0.4% at 2.3 Kw. I frankly have NEVER seen Harris get off their
butts and do something like that. I'm kind of amazed......... We also made them
extend the warranty period to 4 years so I guess we'll see how it works. I did
get a full set of spares.

No idea, but I have turned AM IBOC off on KLIF, and am going to resist turning
it on period on KTCK when I get finished with all the details of a power upgrade

from 9 Kw. to 25 Kw. unless I receive a direct order.

I have no real problem with FM IBOC but the AM codec SUCKS! It sounds like a bad

MP3 and commits "legal" willful and malicious to stations on either side locally

and to on channel stations via sky wave at night which is why the FCC initally
allowed it only during the day. In the North East where population density is
high some stations were interfering with other stations owned by the same
company in other towns. That's why a lot of owners have turned IBOC off.

This is a daytime IBOC only station, they have tried it at night and had some
kind of problem, does anyone know just how long it's been off?
