[AMRadio] Operating on 14.286

I used to try to check into the 14.286 net back in the late `80s. Talk about
a gathering of Eagles. Les of course, Bill W8VYZ, Ozona Bob W5PYT, Tim
WA1HLR, Doug VE4BX, and a host of others.

When the band was open one didn`t need much power. I was running a stock
Ranger l with a sloping dipole, listening on a National NC-57. One night Les
and I had a pipeline and he insisted that I admit to the linear amp I was
running! Made my day; kinda like the high school lineman who picks up a
fumble and ambles into the endzone! You don`t forget those moments... Les
was for many years in charge of Standards and Measurements at Hughes
Aircraft. He insisted that everyone be zerobeat 14.286.

Les actually visited my QTH during one of his around the nation jaunts. He
wore an artificial leg and if I remember correctly had lost his leg in WW2
during the Battle of the Bulge. Never slowed him down. He was originally
from Science Hill, Kentucky.
