[AMRadio] Operating on 14.286

W6QS from the left coast and W3PHL from Penn in the East. PHL ran several "super
modulation" rigs.
Many good QSOs back then.
I hope as conditions improve there will be more activity on 20 and 10 AM.
Today there was a wide opening on 10 all across South America with a few US
signals.
Perhaps AMers should pick a frequency around 28,350 for AM calling. Maybe more
will show up.
The CB band was wall to wall signals. I use them as a beacon to tell when the
band opens.

Jay said exactly what I was about to write.
If you missed his comment about AM on 14.286, see below my signature.
Les, K6HQI, was the west coast flagship station on 14.286. From the
time I acquired my first short-wave receiver in 1966, until his death
at least 15 or so years ago, I could probably count the evenings when
Les wasn't on the air on my fingers and toes. His signal was always
very good.
However, the unquestionable 20 meter powerhouse signal from the west
coast into Mississippi was Fred, W6QS. Fred wasn't on the air as often
as K6HQI, but, when he was there, as one of my SWL friends described
it, he was "beyond loud!"
If my memory is correct, W6QS was a key player in a movement known as
the AM Rebellion, which ran through the early and mid 1960s. I think
this group was the really big promoter of "super modulation."
Maybe someone here can give us that chapter of AM operating history.

There needs to be another beacon like Ashtabula Bill W8VYZ! When
Bill, Les
K6HQI, and Ralph KD6OS held court there was a ton of activity! 73 de
jay/w5jay..
Have you heard anything on 14.286 in the past few years? It was active
here
on the LEFT COAST until about 5 years ago then it dried up and the SSB
people moved in.

Using a older tube pi network transmitter is like driving a stick
shift.
You can enjoy it after you use it a while and you never forget, just
maybe
have trouble remembering after a while. I miss my old boatanchors.
But had to lighten the load when moving.
BTW, I monitor 14.285 listening for AM stationswhen 20 is open.

Yet it's amazing just how fast someone picks it up once they get
interest in AM and/or old gear.
The fact that new rigs don't require it doesn't mean everyone
shouldn't know the basics of how a transmitter tunes. IWho knows when
it might come in handy? In my opinion, of course.
