Bill:

First thing I would do is see if a cheap silicon transistor
(PNP, of course) would work.  They're a dime apiece.
If the supply voltage is several (as opposed to perhaps
3 or so) a silicon transistor should work.  As I recall this
is the case.  In which case you can save yourself a
bundle of time and funds.
