How is it drastic? Surely you jest!
I've performed the "other" methodology! Works extremely well!
Folks have to understand that the front panel audio control - ISN'T! It
is the "clipper" control!
Peek through the key jack! THAT is the mic gain! Leave the clipper
control darn near zero!
It does NOT mean you build an external modulation system, power it and
then feed your audio in externally.
Come on folks! Let's give the man some HELP to GET STARTED. The
"intent" is to get him up and running. We have the chance to get
another one of "US" up and going.
Sometimes I get really bent out of shape!
He CAN start with the Icom dialed down enough, and fed into an
amplifier. Then we teach him how to adjust the audio, MINUS all the
compression.
He can then join us, and we can walk him through getting a full plate
modulated radio with 100W out. Then after he gets happy and
comfortable, he can get pointed to a Big Rig!
My $0.02.
Happy New Year!
