H,
" What would be the simplest, minimum workable long wire antenna for 80 and 40
meters? I can run a 20 to 90 feet long wire 20 feet above ground."
The ART13 was designed to work into a 'short' antenna. I'd try the endfed long wire. Or, slope it upwards. 63 feet's a 1/4 wave on 80m.
"Do I need a counterpoise? I do not have a good grounding system. "
It will probably help; your counterpoise is the other end of the antenna, i.e. the airframe the transmitter was operated from. Endfeds are
" Or, alternatively, I can
erect a commercial vertical designed to accept a 50 ohm output."
The '13's tuning networks are not specifically designed for a 50 ohm load. I'd just use the transmiter as is ( with a ~60 wire attached to the gnd connector)and see what happens.
