Try using an AMPLIFIED D-104 on it...or use a pre amp into it ...The ART13
requires a lot of Audio Drive... You will really need an antenna tuner on
the output with a G5RV... Hope a little help

Subject: [AMRadio] ART13 help

Hello,

I have been restoring an ART13 and here is my current situation. I'd
appreciate any suggestions or advice you may have.

On Voice and MCW I can get very good output and the 200w incandescent bulb
dummy load glows nice and bright. All the voltages on the plate and grid of
the 813, 811s, 1625s and 837 are at the correct values.

Here are remaining issues:

1. On CW, there is no output whatsoever, even though the vacuum relay clicks
when I key. The VFO is not producing any signal on any frequency. No
difference whether I am in Calibrate, Tune or Operate position. It feels as
though a previous owner somehow had disabled the CW function altogether.

2. On Voice, the PTT switch works, but as I speak into the microphone (a
T17 carbon mike) the dummy load bulb's brightness doesn't change; it doesn't
glow brighter as one would expect. Do you think the carbon inside has become
solidified and dysfunctional? If so, any good remedy?

I can try a dynamic mike from my modern HF gear (I will first switch to the
Dynamic position behind the frequency panel of the ART13.) I assume there is
enough amplification to accommodate a modern dynamic mike.

3. What would be the simplest, minimum workable long wire antenna for 80 and
40 meters? I can run a 20 to 90 feet long wire 20 feet above ground. Do I
need a counterpoise? I do not have a good grounding system. Or,
alternatively, I can erect a commercial vertical designed to accept a 50 ohm
output.

I only have a G5RV Jr.,(designed for 40-10 meter for use with modern HF
rigs.) Do you think I can "force feed" this antenna for 80 and 40? If so,
should I insert some additional capacitance between the Antenna and Ground
connections on the ART13?

Thanks for your help.

73,

Hiroki AH6CY
