I'd wager a bet that none of us on this forum are "upper crust."
They don't waste time here.
I started in CB as well about 35 years ago. Wrong radios, too much power, giant antennas etc.
Glad I did. Then an elmer that started a class in Burnt Hills New York dragged me into the novice class and here I am as a licensed ham this many years later.
Guess what? I have a Cobra 2000 base CB next to my massive AM station run into the same tuner into a dipole. Several times I have helped truckers and motorists on 87 in New York in the Adirondacks where the CB would work but Verizon and AT&T was useless.
There has been a renewed interest in CB among high school students here in redneck Vermont. Several of the neighborhood kids have seeked out my help with installs, antenna's, swr etc. I enjoy helping them out and showing them the ability of VHF repeaters at the same time. Future hams? Who knows.......
My nickle worth.
