Bob,
It is a false impression. The r-390 and the R-390A were VERY purpose
built for radio intercepts AND diversity reception.
The R-390A was a "cost reduction" version of the R-390.
The entire R-39() series is built in modules, that are interchangeable
without regard to chassis S/N. You turn off, unscrew the "green screws"
that mount THAT module, disconnect the cabling, and drop in a repaired
module, reversing the process.
The "digital readout" is a mechanical device that is driven by the
synchronized gear train.
