[AMRadio] Why do some people capitalise "ham"?

I have been a ham/HAM since 1958....50 years, and have always
capitalized it.  Seeing in as all lower case doesnt look right to me.
But I have also seen it as Ham, which to me makes NO sense, since its
not a word.
