Make that the early 80's.  Back then, for a couple of years I ran the radio 
service shop for a two-way radio company and amateur equipment dealer, and 
most of the Japanese rice boxes I worked on that included AM at all ran full 
DSB.  As I recall, Yaesu was about the only manufacturer that included AM at 
the time.
