I stand corrected, that's how I did mine. Can't imagine how a 1/4 inch
fiberglass rod would be damaged, but............... I'll not tempt fate.

Regarding home made spacers.

If you run the feed wire on the outside of the spacer and the tie wire 
through the hole it will be be much easier to replace a damaged spacer.
