That's my take on it too, guys  Ahhhh.. For the good old days when one
cheater cord would fit 99.9% of all electronic equipment!

My understanding is that it came about in the TV servicing community,
from using cords from old sets to work on a set with the back off
(since most TV set backs had the cord clipped into place, removing
power from the set when you removed the back).

That doesn't mean it's true, just how I remember it. (o:
