Thanks to Ed Sieb's outstanding suggestions, my Blackface Johnson Messenger
2 now sounds damn good.

Mark was interested in the mods, so I did a little recording and Analysis..

Red line is the bone stock Radio
Blue line is 2 caps swapped (C24, C35)
Green line is 3 caps swapped (C24, C31, C35)

The Mods:

C24, C31, C35
Stock Values: .005 uF
Modification Values: 0.22 uF

Jumper R48 to increase power output to 8-10 watts carrier
