Yes, and No. Back in 1948 at the ripe old age of 8 
years I had a great Elmer W8ZFZ(SK), who helped me 
learn the code and about radio. He helped me get 
my Novice license, build my own transmitter and 
modify the BC454 for a receiver and make a 
converter for 40 and 15 meters. 
Had I not had the Elmer I would "maybe" have 
gotten my license much later and missed out on a 
lot of fun and educational activity.
