Less NOISE? No, a LOT of that depends on the conditions.

The noise on SSB comes in the form of perceioved irritation 
in the human ear and brain due to the donald duck type 
distortion one gets with SSB. 
AM has the inherent quality of BLANKING the background 
noise too, so it sounds better an dis inherently far less 
IRRITATING to listen to than SSB.

Facts and figures certainly don't tell the whole story. 
In some marginal conditions, SSB can be more intelligible.
However, if you wat GOOD SOUNDING audio with low noise, 
it becomes quite desirable for the SSB signal to be wider than
the typical narrow, raspy signals one hears on the ham bands.
