   Once you remove the pins themselves from the base, they are loose - the 
casting fill is to keep them in the 'pattern' so you dont' have to 
insert/remove individual pins - which of course is a perfectly fine way of 
doing it as well - as long as you're sure you can get Pin 1 back in socket 
position 1, etc...

   Even with the fill, you'd have to be pretty careful to get the 
orientation right, unless you were totally obsessed and cast a keypost 
into it as well....  ;}
