Gentlemen,
I said this before and few seem to realize it and take heed. The ground lead
in most old work 220V outlets is for safety ONLY. It was never meant to be the
return (neutral) lead so that you can pull 110V off between one side of the
line and ground. To do this safely and legally, you MUST use a 4 wire cable and
the return (neutral) MUST be the same size as the 220V conductors. In most
cases, the hot leads are Red and Black and the neutral
(if present) is White. The ground lead is usually a bare wire. The ground or
bare lead may or may not be the same size as the other conductors and is there
for safety only. The fact that it may be connected to the same buss as the
neutral in the breaker box has absolutely nothing to do with it. Not only can
you get fried doing it the way many propose, but should a fire result, you may
find that your insurance company will use the fact to worm out of paying
damages. Think about it and do it right. "Switch to safety."

John, W4AWM
