Theo, if you heard something about a J3 sounding
better than a J4, it probably was supposed to come out
that the 51J2 sounded better than the 3 or 4. Before
the J3 the sets used LC circuitry to define bandwidth,
not mechanical filters.  Same with the 75A2 and 75A.
All have an LC with a more gentle rolloff, or shape
factor, in defining selectivity compared to the
mechanical filters that look more like a square wave,
and bring a certain shaped audio characteristic
besides.
