If you want a sure fire solution to the high voltage problem use GTO-15 
wire.  It's used in neon signs among other things.  I've used it many 
times in 3000 to 5000 volt at 500 to 800 ma applications and never had a 
problem.  You can get it in a variety of colors and even super flexible.
