Here in the Northeast, people join a roundtable QSO and then tune up when
it's turned over to them. It's "fun" listening to dead air while they
meticulously dip the dipper and peak the peaker countless times. Gives
the other members time to take a break, grab a beer, go to the bathroom,
or have dinner.
