For an   excellent discussion on Doherty and related techniques, see an 
article in QST, Dec. 1950.   The piece is titled ""Supermodulation" - An Evaluation 
and Explanation" and was written primarily to rebut the wild claims being 
made at the time for Taylor system.   The article was written by O.G. Villard, 
W6QYT, an EE professor at Stanford University.
