Good advice on checking shunts.  Another quick check on the meter, that I
use all of the time, is to series a 1500 ohm resistor with a 1.5 volt
battery placing all in series with the meter to check for defection.
With a little ohms law I can come up with the internal resistance and
defection range of unknown meters.
