Jeff,

I'm not sure why they used A2 emission, but it may be a throwback to spark 
days.  In the  early days of tube radio, both hams and commercial stations 
would mechanically chop the CW to make it tone modulated.  The advantage of 
A2 is like AM vs SSB, you can copy it on a diode detector, and the frequency 
is not critical as it is with A-1.
Perhaps many of the Liberty Ships weren't equipped with then-modern 
receivers with BFO's and the required stability.

That's a good question.

Enjoyed the QSO.  I didn't know at first that it was a blown fuse.  Just 
thought band condx had changed.
