Jim,  why  not  try to fix the  can?   Are  the windings  fried?  Open it  
up  and  have a look.  Usually  there are bad  caps in  there-  an easy fix. 
  But  you  would  also  be  surprised  how  some  makers  stuff resistors  
inside  those  old  larger  cans.  Check it out good  luck,  Russ
