It depends on the radio.  The Ranger and Johnson 500 always did sound pretty 
good.  So did the Desk Kilowatt (although I always thought that "desk" 
arrangement was a silly way to build a  transmitter).  The other EFJ phone 
rigs (Viking I, II and Valiant)  undermodulate and the audio usually sounds 
like pure crap without extensive mods.
